Question:
Question about Propane Tanks and Smokers?

I am planning a Smoker build. My plan is to use a 150 to 250 Gal. Propane tank. I have someone to help that does welding for a living.

1) Where is the best place to get a propane tank? What will I expect to pay for one?
2) Are there books you can buy with smoker plans? If so, ones using propane tanks?
3) I have a 250 Gal. oil tank available to me for free to use. Would it work as well as a propane tank? I am planning on welding it to a trailer.

I have been smoking for years. I smoke for friends and family. I am starting to get into fairly large groups. 100 + type. So I have decided to make the plunge. In the beginning I couldn't justify it but now I can and I have no interest in buy a bunch of small smokers.

Thanks for the help.

I agree, a large propane tank might be a bit on the heavy side. It also might take a long time to heat up due to the "thermal mass" of the thick metal. Otherwise I don't see why it wouldn't work, though.

A lot of people use reclaimed 55 gallon drums for smokers, I'm sure you've seen those before. I guess you're wanting something bigger than that, though.

One place you could try is a metal recycling business. Also, there are companies that specialize in propane tanks and propane equipment. Tanks need to be certified and inspected every few years. No doubt they'd be willing to sell you an old tank that they were going to scrap. Or, they might just give you a funny look and show you the door when you explain why you want it.

If you use the oil tank, be sure to clean it out with oven cleaner, or some kind of industrial de-greaser to remove any oil residues. Otherwise you may end up with meat that tastes a bit like diesel engine exhaust, lol.

Good luck.

A propane tank is WAY to heavy a material for a smoker. They are "pressure tanks".

IF your welder is STUPID enough to try cutting a used propane tank, he deserves what he gets. (BOOM!!)

NEW ones are about $1500 for a 250 gallon tank.

Sounds more like you want a portable BBQ unit than a "smoker."
