I have an idea for a table to use in my living room. I want to use wires on four corners of a large, table-top like board to hold up on a ceiling and have it come up and down at the height I desire. Problem is, I have the idea, but I just don't know how to make something like this work. Please help me out. I like having multiple use for my spaces. :D

you would need to have 4 pulleys on the ceiling.

one for each corner directly above each corner.

that is the only way you could make it stable when you place a weight on any of the sides of the table.

if you tried to use only 2 pulleys , the table would just tilt over when weight was put any place but the exact center of the table.

A simpler way would be to use 4 chains , one at each corner,

then use a S shaped hook to connect the chain links to adjust the height of the table.

the chain could be the same chain that is use for " swag lamps" and you can but S shaped hooks at home depot type places,

Or you could put the 4 pulleys in the ceiling matching the 4 corners of the table top.

then run a cord / rope from each corner of the table up and over each pulley and then directly back down to the table corner and provide a place to tie it off to.

If you use this method you would not even need to use pulleys.

you could just use simple " eye screws" to screw into the wood ceiling joists .

the "ceiling joists" should be spaced 2 feet apart.

So the cord would go from each corner of the table ..up to the " eye screw " and directly back down to the same corner ,, where you would secure it.

Kind of like how you raise and lower window blinds .

hope that helps.

As the others said get your four corner pulley and attach them to you ceiling and use eye hooks for your table corners. You will also need 2 extra pulleys, 1 eye bolt and a 110 hoist. The 2 extra pulleys will have to be mounted in the ceiling rt next to your wall in line with the other pulleys in the ceiling. So you should have 3 pulleys in line on one side and 3 on the other. Mount your hoist to the flooring in the center of your 2 pulleys closest to the wall. About 1 ft above your hoist install your eye hook. Now from the farthest corners of the table attach your cables and run them up thru the pulley across the ceiling and thru the second and third pulley down the wall thru the eye hook and attach them to the hoist. Now on the closest edge of the table attach your cable and run it up thru the pulley to the wall pulley's and down thru the eye hook and attach to your hoist. This is the only way you can raise and lower the table without having it to rip into your ceilings and walls.

If you put pulleys in the ceiling, make sure they go in a joist and not just into the wallboard.

They used to make drying racks like this. Probably a pulley above each corner of the table, then lines to the wall, then more pulleys so the wires all come together and can be secured to one ring.

It's going to sway like crazy, though, if you use it as a table and not just storage.
