First if you attempt to sharpen the blade, be sure you disconnect the spark plug before you do anything else. People have had some pretty nasty accidents messing with lawnmower blades still attached to the mower.

The only practical thing that you can use to sharpen a blade by hand would be a metal file. Even so, that is a lot of work but if you have the time and patience, have at it.

Take care to keep the amount of sharpening even along the blade and not take too much off on one side or the other. That could put the blade out of balance and cause a lot of shaking when you run the mower.

The Dremel tool has a nice attachment for sharpening lawn mower blades. Not to expensive, sometimes it comes with the Dremal. Usually improvising to sharpen just makes the blade worse....I found out the hard way. the Dremel has a guide on it, even amounts taken off, so if it was balanced before it will be after. Ive never heard of using a 'metal fine'?

You have mentioned using house items. Depending what you have in your house......I prefer to remove the blade from the mower. My choice for sharpening is a belt sander with coarse grit paper, if badly dinged i will sharpen with a grinding wheel. Dremel tool may be a little light duty for this application. If all else fails, most hardware stores will sharpen for about $3.00

Yes a metal fine, dremel tool.. etc. Just be sure to make sure its balanced (nail in a post and hang it by the bolt hole, sharpen on the side more it goes off to till it balances out level. (use a level)
