So I've got two wood barstools that I'm wanting to fix up for my "man cave". I'm planning on painting one of them black and one red, and placing a sports team decal in the middle of each and then clear coating over that. Would this work? What kind of paint do I need? Thanks in advance!

I recommend you talk to a paint store expert. For myself, I would paint it with a good enamel, apply the decals and then cover with a high-quality polyurethane clear coat.

Let it cure for quite a while. The seat is going to take a lot of wear so make sure you use the good stuff and let it cure thoroughly..

Home centers and paint stores usually sell a clear product which is similar to polyurethane but is an epoxy resin and can be applied much thicker...usually called bar top coating...and is used to coat bar tops, table tops, displays, etc..for better wear and tear properties. That's what I would use to cover the decals/seats for better wear but make sure it's compatible with any paints/decals you use...or use proper paints. You may have to apply in several thin coats or make some kind of trough around the rim of the stools to hold the epoxy in place until it cures.

Some websites of various brands...

Another vote for the poly here. I've had outstanding results from the wipe on poly sold at most hardware stores. Its really easy to apply, no runs, drips or careful brushing. Put it on with a clean rag, add several coats and you're done, its as foolproof as you can get. I would suggest that you sand the entire surface with at least 220 grit sandpaper before applying the finish.

Look up Decoupage.
