Question:
Can I add a plug to my electric oven or do i need to connect using a spur?

I am just about to buy a new electric oven. My old oven was just a simple plug into a 13A socket.
The one I am looking at doesn't have a plug but comes with the cable to connect it to a cooker connection box (aka a spur).

I would rather just fit a plug and plug it into the same socket that i plugged the old oven into.

I think in theory I should be able to do this without it causing any problems.

However the website where I am purchasing the oven from has conflicting information. Some comments from its experts state that it must be hard wired into the wall, whilst others state that a plug can be fitted.

Any advice would be appreciated.

IS there any specific reason that an oven may come with a plug and others come with a cable for a cooker connection?

If it comes to it I could fit a cooker connection box easily enough but if I can get away with fitting a plug to the cable I would rather do that.

13A Plug on 1.5mm flex will be perfectly fine.

Only issue is with large-current regular-use items (like immersion heaters) and "pin fizz".

Just ensure that the plug is properly seated and not strained when sliding oven into the hole.

Grill element will be roughly 800W, main element around 2.2-2.5 Kw

Most ovens today are built for a 600mm. wide module, and are quite safely plugged in to a 13 amp socket. Some of the wider gas hob/electric oven combinations require a 20 amp supply, and a connection with 2.5 sq. mm. twin & earth cable. Check the rating plate on the oven, and the installation book. If the flex fitted to the oven is no more than 2.5 sq. mm. 13 amp should be fine

Ovens draw too much current for a 13A plug and should be wired to a separate circuit usually 30A. The cable should be much larger than a normal flex. Plugging into the ring main could overload it and cause a fire.

If it is only a max. of 3000 (3Kws) watts it will be OK..

3000w / 240v = 12.5 amps - which is fine for a 13Amp plug top with 13Amp fuse.

If not, it must have a connection box rated at say 45Amps at least.
