I have recently graduated so please excuse my naivety! I am setting up a wood working workshop and am deciding what machinery to buy, as I am only going to be renting a workshop and do not want to mess about with having specialist electric supply, how do i know what sort of socket will come on my new machines?

for example the band saw at the link below is a 230 volt, normal electric sockets are 240 volt so this should be a normal domestic plug socket and be fine to plug into and normal domestic style supply?

Actually, Jordan, I believe Ryan is in the uk, if you look at the address of the website he put up, where all the regular household recepts are 240 volts. And Ryan, a tool rated for 230 volts will work just fine in a 240 volt socket. There's an allowance of 10% variation, plus or minus for voltage. So when working with 240 volt supply anything rated at 216 volts up to 264 volts should run alright. As long as the plug end on the power cord fits directly into your normal recept, they should work well. Enjoy your new journey into woodworking. I wish we were closer together, it would be enjoyable to share information with a young, energetic, enthusiastic woodworker. At any rate, welcome to the hobby or business, as the case may be and if I can be of long range assistance, feel free to email or IM me. My address is in my profile.

In the event that you need to discover pleasant thoughts for woodworking i can propose you to check a website ( ( woodworkingplans.kyma.info ) ) It's perfect in the event that you are simply starting out or in case you're a prepared carpenter. It has thousands and thousands of woodworking arrangements and you have a CAD/DWG software to view and alter the arrangements. You have regulated instructions with photographs and excellent blueprints and schematics. On the off chance that you are a beginner this is the simplest approach to start your woodworking projects, and on the off chance that you already have experience you can at any rate discover a ton of interesting thoughts!

If you are only going to use single phase machines you need to be watching the current rating on the machines as normal domestic plugs will only carry 13 amps max. Some machines need a larger plug and socket arrangement. If a machine is rated at about 2 horse power or 1500 Watts that would be about the maximum on a 13a plug as you need to allow for the starting current surge. The machine you have indicated is about the maximum on a 13a plug.

No. 240V plugs are not the same size/shape as household 120V plugs. There are many different styles of 240V plugs and receptacles, for instance an electric dryer uses one style, and generators use another. Also, for a 240V circuit, you will need a 2-pole circuit breaker.

Thank you for the correction Corky, my mistake.
