I'm looking for a cheap way of heating my pool. It's an above ground 21' in diameter.
Any suggestions?

I have an above ground 21' also. Only mine is "dug out" to deepen the center area to about 61/2'. I use what I call my

"SOLAR HOOSIER HEATER".

I have taken about 150' of black rubber (craftsman) garden hose and coiled it loosely atop my nearby metal pool shed. This shed is in full sunlight all day, and we all know how hot they get. We also know what water left in a black rubber hose can do in the sun.

One end has a large pond pump connected, that I toss into the deeper area to get the coldest water.

The other end I lay over the inside edge of the pool. The heated water that comes out is usually 5 to 8 degrees hotter than the rest of the water. We all have used a hose that was left on and laid in the sun. The water comes out scorching.

More hose and the water gets hotter because it is in the sun longer. I wish I had a larger roof to lay more on. I have used this method for several years and I swear by it. I only let this pump circulate during daylight hours.

I also wonder if maybe using a smaller, slower pump would increase the time the water is in the "SOLAR HOOSIER HEATER" and could get hotter.

I also use my solar cover when it gets cold at night. I use the craftsman rubber hose because it is guaranteed and can be returned if the sun deteriorates it.

This has got to be cheap.

Saw a very clever solution using just a garden hose & an old washing machine pump.

They just pumped water from the pool onto the roof of adjacent garage & let it run back into the pool through the gutter.

This was an inground setup, but could be rigged for above ground.

Using same type of pump, a homemade solar heater is also a possibility.

A shallow box made w/ a sheet of plywood , painted black inside. flexible copper tubing laced back & forth w/ hose fittings & valves on each & covered w/ clear plastic or glass.

Awater filled black painted drum w/ copper tubing wrapped around it also works & was common on Florida roofs as a poor man's water heater for showering & washing.

Same pump & valve setup as panel.

Best regards.

I have heated my 16-ft and 12 ft pools wit an solar pool blanket and a homemade solar heater. After the water in the pool goes through the filter I add a garden hose that connects to 8 coiled black sprinkler system type hoses. The hoses are laid in the sun to collect the heat and then the water goes back into a garden hose and into the pool. My father kept his black hosing on the roof of the house. I have mine on a tarp on the east side of the pool. Our water is always warm. I do have a Y at the end of the filter and the beginning of the solar hose, so if we have a week of cold weather It can be diverted directly into the pool. You will need to look in pluming department for the connections that convert from sprinkler hose to garden hose. I live in Denver Colorado.

Debbie's answer is great.

If you add a valve in the line so you can reduce the flow of water through the black hose, the water will get hotter.

You will need to play around with the valve to find out the best position to get the best results. With a low flow, you may get hotter water ... but not enough hotter water to make a difference in the pool. It might be better to have more water flowing at less temperature to have a better effect on the pool temp.

The best way is to put a black cover over the pool when you are not using it. That way the sun will heat it for you free.

A big wood stove. They generate a ton of heat with little cost. My neighbors do it. I'm sure it would take a little fabricating, but it's possible.
