I my older brother and I both grew up with a glass coffee table and end tables... it had wooden legs with a wooden shelf below the glass to put a flower under them... These tables had nothing covering the edges of the glass. The glass top was about a half inch thick and it survived us and we survived it... We never got hurt on the coffee table it was always when we were playing and such... If that is what you like in your home, don't hesitate.. The children and the table/s will be fine. I have a scar under my left eye not from the table but from playing baseball with my brother when I was four.. I pitched it, he hit it and I just "kept my eye on the ball". LOL. But the tables and the children will be fine.

If the glass is tempered, safety glass, there shouldn't be any problem. Make sure the glass is tempered so it will not break easily. Also, it must be safety glass, so if it does break, a plastic layer will hold the pieces of glass together. The label should be right on the glass parts of the table. Training the kids about how to treat furniture is also a real good idea. We had a coffee table with sharp corners. One of our daughters fell and hit her head on the corner. Luckily, the cut was not where it shows, but we learned a tough lesson about picking the right shape table as well. Our next table was lighter, with rounded corners and edges.

With kids around it would be hard to keep it clean (streak free). That would be my only concern.

I had a glass dining table when my children were small. It was always covered with little fingerprints, especially on the underside where they thought it was fun to play. If you don't want to climb under the table with the Windex constantly I would wait until they are older.

When I found out my wife was pregnant we decided that all of our decisions will be based on our child's safety and development. I had to carpet over our beautiful hardwood floors and buy a coffee table with rounded corners. We probably would have been OK with what we had but why take the chance. If you can afford it the I say that you are better safe than sorry. If one of your children falls through the top of a table with 3 inch glass you will have bigger problems than finding a table you like.

no, its a bloody silly idea... it'll get broken... we had one, it was fine, right up till jessica tripped over, as toddlers do. and smashed her head into it... luckily, sensible stuart, (thats me) had used some crystal clear self adhesive laminate (in im england, we called it fablon) its like the stuff you can recover your worktops with... sticky back plastic.. put it under the glass so no one sees it...

like i said, she smashed into it. cracked the glass, but thankfully didnt get cut. Glass tables, no matter how gorgeous they are, dont mix with little children, they have no idea of the inherent danger... whereas you do.

If your children are well behaved and know what "NO" means then go for it. Keep hard plastic toys away from the table so they don't bang on the top. Any decorative items to sit on the top should be wooden and not ceramic or metal. You should be ok.

I bought a beautiful coffee table to match my end tables. It lifted up to become an eating table while you where sitting on the couch. Shortly after buying it I became pregnant. I haven’t seen that brand new table in 7 years. I made my husband put it away while the kids where young. As far as glass ~ here is a memory from the past. I was in High School and I was babysitting. They had a glass covered coffee table. The phone rang and while I was taking a message I without even thinking leaned on the coffee table with my knee and went right through it. As much as you really want it, it just isn’t worth what can happen. Another thing ~ kids are rough and bang on furniture and it will get destroyed (or one of the kids could get very hurt). Why not wait until they are older and than you can enjoy it without any worries. Good luck!
