Installed new tile in my kitchen and now installing laminate floors in the surrounding rooms. There are two transitions that i need to install.

The new tile is higher then the new laminate floor, what type of transition molding do i need to use and any tips on how to install. How much room should i leave between laminate floor and the higher tiled floor for this molding.

thanks

I would not lay the 2 floors then start looking for a transition molding....some of them need to go under the floor u are laying....they make molding for different floor heights....there are so many u just need to go to the flooring dept and pick 1 u like....some of the molding come in 2 pieces...a metal piece that u attach to the floor and run your flooring up to ....the metal has a 1/4 inch grove in it....u attach the top molding into the grove of the metal using a soft rubber hammer....the top molding is either wood or a heavy rubber

Since the laminate flooring simulates wood I think a wooden threshold would look good. However since there is a difference in height between the 2 rooms you will have to make an adjustment to the standard store-bought threshhold.

You will have to undercut the portion going over the tile so the board can lay flat.

You dont mention the width of the doorway. If you cant find one that meets your needs at a HD or a Lowes,,then check out a few lumberyards. Many sell threshholds at varying lenghts up to about 5 feet.and between about 4 to 6 inches wide.

If you dont want to undercut the threshhold you can always shim the laminate side.

Laminate flooring comes with matching thresholds that may be able to be used. It depends greatly on the height difference between the floors. If it is more than about 1/4" then you will have to get one custom made or use a metal transition. Metal transitions dont look as nice with laminate flooring but will get the job done
