We have three rooms that have hardwood floors. The floors are in good condition, but lack any kind of luster or newness. We just bought this house last year and are gradually working on making it the way we want it, but I have never cared for hardwood floors before. Any suggestions here? Thanks everyone!

Just because the floors are not shiny looking, is not a bad thing!! I do hardwood for a living and most of my customers prefer a satin or low gloss finish, as it looks silky and hides the many imperfections and "character" marks and nicks that the wood will have to endure for it's lifetime under your feet and busy lives. Bona X resurfacing protection from a reputable hardwood flooring center WILL have the products you are looking for!!!! Stay away from Grocery stores or big box stores as the products there (although cheaper) have a high content of water, which is NOT good for a wood floor ( it will raise the grain to give a poor worn finish) Mirage hardwood floor cleaner or Mannington hardwood floor cleaner!!! NOT mop n glo or Murphy oil soap!!! stop getting advice from stockboys at the grocery store and ask people who earn their living from hardwood flooring !! good luck and enjoy your new floor

You can refinish them. Basically you sand them, stain and seal them. The last seal is some kind of polyurethane, so it will help keep them looking pretty the longest.

If you don't want to sand them, there is an Oxy (or Orange Glo, not sure of the brand) system for cleaning hardwoods that is really good. When we use it on ours it makes the wood look beautiful.

Remove all the furniture. Vacuum the floors. Wipe the floors down with some mineral spirits to clean them, and then re-varnish them with a high gloss oil based floor finish.

Cover all cavity with wood putty (if there is any)the smooth en with fine sand paper. Finally varnish with a 2 coat to bring out the shine

Most important is the smoothing process must be well done, run your hand over it.
