I have this really cute $30 sewing machine I have already practiced and made a purse it doesn’t have any dials to change stitch or any thing fancy like that. So any who, my best friend asked me to make her some curtains she has already picked out the fabric and she measured the windows. What I need to know is if any one has any pointers or suggestions and if any one knows what kind of string I need to get and if I need new needles for the sewing machine any thing at all that can help me make some nice curtans. (I don’t care how small the suggestion is I want to hear it ^^) thanks

Well curtains are pretty easy, depending on the type. They are just hems and a casing (or tabs) for the rod.

As for needle sizes:

12 and smaller - sheers

14 normal fabrics like cotton calico

16 and larger heavy fabrics

You use pointed or all purpose needles for woven fabrics and ball point if you sew on knits.

Thread: Usually you can use all purpose. There is fine stuff that might help you get a nice seam on sheers and nylon upholstry thread for really heavy fabrics. There is also a heavy thread for topstitching too.

So anyway, when you are cutting the curtains, don't forget to leave extra fabric for the hems and casing. Also, most curtains are two to three times the length of the rod, unless you are going for a special effect.

Good luck with your first project!

Depending on the weight of the fabric, you may need a heavier weight needle. The "string" - more commonly known as THREAD, needs to match the fabric and again, depending on the weight of the fabric, may need to be stronger. Usually, a polyester thread will work fine. Cotton thread will take up if washed.

Most places have local sewing centers that will give you pointers and advice on sewing. Check with them. You should be able to find them online, or in the Yellow Pages.
