Uneven floor / cabinets?

Uuugh first time home buyer... how did I not notice.
On 2nd floor over carport. Floor uneven. Do not know why the whole place seems to lean. Put in cabinets 1st or do the floor? Thinking of Laminate. The kicker is; I'm 5'11 and would like to raise my off the shelf Home Depot cabinets (that I havent purchased yet) to a height more comfortable for me. Anyone have ANY suggestions as what to do first or how high to raise. I'm willing to put the base cabinets in myself but not the floor. Thank you.

Usually the floor is left as it is and the cabinets are lifted or lowered individually to the correct height and leveled using a spirit level. When the benches are put on off cuts of timber are wedged between the cupboard and bench to keep every thing level and stable. The kick board is measured to cover the uneven gap left under the cupboard and cut to suit.



You didn't say how big a lean you have. We used a plank of timber (the same length as the wall where the cabinets were going), spirit level and thin wedges of timber to work out how bad the floor level was.



Put the spirit level on floor to establish which way the floor dips. Lay the plank down and place the spirit level on top. Have someone slowly raise the lower end of the plank using the thin wedges until it's level. Measure the gap between the floor and plank. Take the measurement to they cabinet supplier and explain your problem. Even the "off the shelf" cabinet suppliers have someone who is well trained to give advice.



I'm 5'8 and have a bad back, we raised the cupboard by screwing blocks of timber (all the same thickness) to the bottom of the cabinets before attaching the adjustable feet. we worked out the thickness of the timber to use by measuring the high end first and allowing for the feet to be completely wound in, this gave us all the adjustment we needed for the low side.

This is totally normal, although there can be some really bad floors out there. Assuming you want to install? Start at the high spot for the floor, mark where the cabinet top edge will be. level all directions, then screw to wall using shims and wood scraps so screws are supported and not punching through cabinet. Shim other cabinets level. To cover gap you purchase a trim panel that is about 4" tall and 12' long. Trim to length. It goes on the toe kick and also a shoe molding on that next, right against the floor for an remaining gaps. you caulk that in. It can be tough to trim the shims off flush if you have a stack of them but use a sharp blade.

Very few floor layers like to cut around cabinets, yes you will have to buy more flooring but you should save some money on labor being that the floor layer will have to do less cutting, meaning that you floor will go down quicker. and the kick plates that you get with off the shelf cabinets is only 3/16" thick, hope your floor layer cuts straight.



I have set my fair share of cabinets and have never damaged laminet flooring ever. As long as you are carefull your floor will be fine. Just be shure to get a good 4' level and 5 or 6 packages of wood shims. Take your time to level everything twice, doing so will help you down the line.



Set your upper cabinets first. You mentioned that you wanted them higher than normal. Standard is 18" off the top of the counter top but you can put them where ever you like.

TIP: Screw you upper cabinets together on the ground before lifting them into place, this will make things much eaiser and faster for you. I have had real good luck with a 2" or a 2 1/2" star drive trim head screw.



Once you have you uppers set then set your base cabinets making shure to level each one and shim if nessicary. It is not hard work but slow work.

If you have the option, always install the cabinets 1st. (Less flooring to purchase/install with same results.)



There's a number of ways to raise and or level cabinets. Just keep in mind how you're going to dress (hide) the work. (i.e. baseboard, faceplate, etc.. Also remeber that you want to mount it to the wall also. This may require shims there as well. If it needs a lot of shim, that creates another problem that will need to be solved, the crack at the wall and cabinet.



Same with heighth. Are you the only person using the cabinet? If your wife or kids will be using it too, you probably shouldn't raise it. If you're the only one, then raise it to suit yourself keeping in mind how to dress (hide) the work.

There are pros and cons for both, generally get the flooring done first. The kick plate/plinth can then be suited to the floor. Although it depends if you plan to continue the flooring beneath the base units and if the contractor/you are likely to damage the floor when installing the base units. Are these for the kitchen? The standard height of the worktop from the floor is 900mm. Although if you are quite tall, then you may not find this comfortable. Anthropometric data suggests between 889-914mm for counter height. Again it depends on how many people will use the space. Kitchen base units are built to standard sizes which suit the counter height of 900mm. It is the kick plate/plinth that can be adjusted to suit other heights.
